I did have to look some stuff up after the end, but I still had a good grasp of what was going on.Īt this point it should be clear that I love Umineko. It felt quite refreshing to have a narrative that doesn't 'look down' on the reader. Fortunately the mind-screw elements are introduced gradually and so it never feels overwhelming. By half-way through we're dealing with (minor spoilers) personified concepts, characters who are aware that they're in a story, the narrative actively lying and stuff like that. I'm doing my best to avoid spolers, but suffice it to say that things get seriously mind-screwy. Someone is murdered, and they try to figure out who it was before they all get killed.
It starts out with a wealthy family isolated on their private island by a storm.
The story is best described as a love letter to the Muder-Mystery genre. It also gets very complex, with lots of different layers - sometimes literally. I'll just say it - I think it's the best written story I've ever read, in any medium (and I'm including Planescape Torment in that statement, much as I love it). I don't speak Japanese, but you can tell from tone alone exactly how the characters feel. The voice acting is not be sniffed at either, striking a wonderful mix between over-the-top ham and seriousness. There's a wonderful use of recurring themes and association it's brilliantly characterful. Not quite Nier:Automata level, but it fits the story perfectly. (Some people prefer the original, but there's no accounting for taste!) The music is superb.

The original sprites were hand-drawn by the author, and he wasn't the best artist. When talking about Umineko, you can really only discuss 3 things: art, music, and plot. They pick up in pace later on as they assume that the reader already knows who the characters are. Don't expect to do an episode in a single sitting they are all quite lengthy. These vary slightly in length, and are self-contained stories in their own right (except - well, spoilers). Each of these is then split up in to 4 'Episodes' (1-4 and 5-8). If you try playing the Answer Arc first, it will make zero sense. Umineko is split in to two parts the 'Question Arc' and the 'Answer Arc'. Most visual novels have various choices in them that let the player influence the story in some way Umineko has one, right at the end, which only changes the last 10 minutes. It's essentially like reading a picture book with music and (Japanese) voice-acting. But what a plot.įor those who know nothing about this: Umineko is a 'Visual Novel'. The steam version features renewed character sprites which is swappable from the classic art.Tl dr: no gameplay, pure plot.
